Shellycoat is a mischevious but harmless bogle who delights in teasing, tricking, bewildering without harming. Named for his appearance, decked in a coat of shells, his rattling approach gives him away.
One dark night, two travellers were walking along the River Ettrick, and heard a voice shouting “Lost! Lost!” from the river itself. The men followed the cries of the drowning person through the long stormy night, but the voice seemed to be getting further and further away. By the time dawn arose the next day, the voice was heard from the opposite side of the mountain from where the men started. As they gave up their search, there was instant applause and bursts of laughter from Shellycoat at his successful trickery.
