The Lost Piper

Edinburgh’s Old Town underground has always been full of mysteries. A passage that stretched from the Royal Mile down to Holyrood had long been abandoned, ever since Great-Hand had appeared there – a giant, griseled grey hand with long, pointed talons like an eagle. Many years had passed so one day, a brave piper decided to venture down and see if Great-Hand had gone for good. “Don’t worry,” he told folk, “I’ll take my dog, and you’ll be able to follow the sound of my pipes to the other end”. So the piper climbed through the entrance underneath Edinburgh Castle, and began to play his pipes. When he got to the spot known as Heart of Midlothian, the music suddenly stopped. Worried, the crowd ran to the entrance, where they saw the piper’s dog running out, terrified, completely hairless, and with a singed scent of brimstone.

Stories of lost pipers are told all over the country. The piper’s dog and his fiery scent hints that the tunnel may lead to the devil himself…
