The Maiden Stone
The Maiden Stone, also known as the Drumdurno Stone, is a Pictish standing stone near Inverurie. Long ago, the Laird of Balquahain had a beautiful daughter. She made a bet with a handsome stranger that if she could bake a bannock faster than he could build a road to the top of Bennachie, he would win her hand in marriage. Little did she know that the stranger was the devil, who finished the road and claimed his forfeit. The maiden ran from the devil and prayed to be saved. It’s said that God turned her to stone, but the notch on her shoulder is where the devil grasped her as she fled.
